At Byways Dental Practice, we firmly believe in preventive dentistry - helping you to avoid dental disease rather than simply curing it.

The Hygienist

Our hygienist plays a vital role in helping you to keep your teeth and gums in good condition.

Seeing the hygienist regularly helps you to take the best possible care of your teeth and gums so that you can avoid problems caused by decay and gum disease. Gum disease usually goes unnoticed by sufferers until the later stages, but it is the biggest cause of tooth loss in adults.

During your visit our hygienist will clean your teeth professionally, removing any plaque (a layer of sticky bacteria which causes gum disease). Your teeth will then be polished - this helps to prevent further plaque from sticking to them, as well as helping them to look and feel fresh and clean. The hygienist will also monitor the health of your gums and the effectiveness of your home oral healthcare routine, as well as advising you on the best way to care for your teeth.

For children whose permanent molars (back teeth) have come through, our hygienist can also offer fissure sealants. The top surface of molars often has a lot of tiny fissures and gaps, which makes them particularly prone to decay. Fissure sealants are a very thin protective layer which is painted onto the surface of the tooth, helping to prevent decay. For more information, please ask - we’ll be happy to help.

The Oral Health Educator

Not many practices have an oral health educator, but we feel that this role is extremely important, particularly in helping to keep children’s teeth and gums healthy.

The role overlaps that of the hygienist a little. The oral health educator will show you how to clean your teeth properly and how to clean between them and under the gum line, as well as discussing the importance of a good diet and the need to avoid eating sugary foods too often.

Their patients are often the children of our adult patients, but sometimes we will also refer new adult patients if they need a little extra help and advice.

* To make it easy for you to find the products that we recommend for caring for your teeth and gums, we sell them at the practice - just ask at reception or call us on 01491 680412.

“As a mother, it is important to me to know that my children are receiving the best possible dental care. My children love coming to the practice, and the oral health educator has really helped them to understand the importance of looking after their teeth properly.”
